I tried Breathing Ozone through Oil (BOO) at PIH. Here’s what I learned.

Hi, there!  I'm Kayla, the Patient Care Navigator here at PIH.  Being part of the PIH community, I’m always being exposed to ways to support the body. This past year, I encountered several incidences of nasal congestion and post-nasal drip that left me feeling short of breath and fatiguedWhile I’ve since recovered, Falecia, our IV Nurse, recommended I try Breathing Ozone through Olive Oil (BOO) to address any residual symptoms

First of all, what is BOO?

Breathing ozonated olive oil is a practice that involves inhaling or using a nebulizer to deliver a mixture of ozone and olive oil vapor directly into the respiratory system. Ozonated olive oil is created by infusing medical-grade ozone gas (O3) into pure olive oil. This process is believed to create a mixture that combines the potential benefits of both ozone and olive oil.

Benefits

Breathing ozonated olive oil may offer several potential health benefits, including:

  1. Respiratory Support: Inhalation of ozonated olive oil may help support the respiratory system by providing antimicrobial properties that could potentially combat infections or harmful microorganisms.
Oxygenation: Ozone is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms, and inhaling ozonated olive oil might provide a temporary increase in oxygen levels in the body, which could promote feelings of energy and well-being.
  2. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Ozone is believed to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Breathing ozonated olive oil could potentially help reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract.
  3. Immune System Support: Ozone is known for its potential immune-modulating effects. Inhaling ozonated olive oil might stimulate the immune system and promote a balanced immune response.
  4. Detoxification: Ozone is thought to aid in detoxification by promoting the breakdown of toxins and metabolic waste. Inhaling ozonated olive oil could potentially support the body's detoxification processes.

You should certainly talk to your health practitioner to see if you could benefit from BOO, especially if you struggle with allergy season or the recent unhealthy levels of air pollution.

My Time on the BOO

The process itself was surprisingly simple. As I relaxed into the comfortable chair, I let the calming music of our sea foam colored IV room wash over me. Falecia prepared the mixture of ozonated olive oil, a concoction that combined the natural properties of olive oil with the potential benefits of ozone at a specific flow rate. She lightly placed the nasal tubes around my face. Then, I gently inhaled the vapor, which carried the earthy aroma of olive oil.  As an olive oil lover, this felt heavenly.

The experience, which lasted 25 minutes, was unlike anything I'd tried before. The sensation of the vapor as it entered my respiratory system was calming and invigorating at the same time. There was no immediate rush, but rather a gentle revitalization of my nasal passages and respiratory system. After my procedure, I felt like it helped to clear out any remaining mucus.

I will undoubtedly be doing this again.

Takeaway

Overall, my experience with breathing ozonated olive oil left me intrigued and feeling more liberated. As with any new health practice, I believe in a balanced and informed approach. After all, my wellness journey is all about curiosity, learning, and embracing holistic paths to health.
