As we continue to learn more about the novel coronavirus and the toll it has taken all around the world, we're also learning more about why it affected some much worse than others. While many healthy people died from COVID-19, the vast majority of cases had other comorbidities which contributed to adverse reactions and death. The CDC statistic that got so much attention is that only 6% of deaths listed COVID-19 as the only cause of death, whereas 94% of those who died had other conditions that contributed to their death.
If you dig into the numbers, some of those comorbidities were caused by the virus, such as respiratory failure. However, as of August 29, 2020, comorbidities associated with circulatory, cardiovascular, obesity, and/or diabetes were listed nearly 150,000 times. These are some of the most common, yet preventable, chronic illnesses in America.
