The Benefits of PDO Threads: A Minimally Invasive Alternative to Botox and Fillers

Looking for an alternative for Botox or facial fillers?  PDO (Polydioxanone) threads may be what you're looking for.

PDO threads are a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure gaining popularity in the field of aesthetics. These threads use a biodegradable polyester to provide a more youthful appearance.  Our nurse practitioner, Samantha, FNP, provides PDO threads as part of our graceful aging.  “For any type of sagging skin or skin that has lost its elasticity due to aging, loss of collage, PDO threads help to lift, plump, and tighten the skin,” Samantha says.

What to expect

PDO threads are inserted into the skin to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate various areas of the face.  Once inserted, PDO threads work by stimulating collagen production and promoting tissue tightening, resulting in a noticeable lift and rejuvenation effect. This procedure typically takes 60 to 90 minutes.  While patients notice a modest degree of lift immediately after the procedure, the full results can be seen at 4-5 weeks.  Within six to eight months, the threads gradually dissolve, leaving behind a network of newly produced collagen that helps patients achieve lifted cheeks and a tighter jaw line.

Benefits

This innovative procedure offers several advantages. Firstly, PDO threads provide an immediate visible lift and tightening effect, with continued improvements in the following weeks as collagen production is stimulated.  PDO threads have been scientifically examined for their efficacy. A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology demonstrated the effectiveness of PDO threads in improving facial laxity, with a high patient satisfaction rate and minimal adverse effects [1]. Another study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology highlighted the long-term benefits of PDO threads, including improvements in skin texture and appearance [2].

Secondly, the treatment is minimally invasive, involving only small incisions or needle punctures, resulting in minimal downtime and discomfort. PDO threads have a much lower risk of complications than a facelift.

Considerations

While PDO threads are generally well-tolerated, it is important to consult with a qualified medical professional who can assess your individual needs and determine if this treatment is suitable for you. They will consider factors such as your skin condition, medical history, and treatment goals.  According to Samantha, the best results of PDO threads are seen in people ages 25-60.  PDO threads While there is no down time, you may have some swelling and bruising for the first 24 to 48 hours.  At the end of your visit, you’ll get a care package including an ice pack, oral and topical arnica.  The homeopathic remedy arnica montana has been proven to significantly reduce facial bruising [3].
